You can probably find 33k external modems at a junk shop for a dollar or two. A used 56k for maybe $10 -- when people get broadband they throw these out (I got two gratis that way). A Mac modem cable might cost more than the modem. Doesn't make a big difference for the basic email, but if you spend any time online, go for 56k.
