VM is fine as a stop-gap measure until you can afford more RAM. In your case, as well as the original poster's, you have 512MB or more of RAM. When the OS uses VM, it puts a file equal to or greater than your RAM in size onto your SLOW hard drive. I'd be surprised if it speeds up startup at 500+MB, and can tell you it will slow down the system if the VM (or swap) is actually used. However, with 500+MB of RAM I'd be surprised if you needed the extra memory that VM is designed to fake. Of course, in OS X there is no way to turn off VM.
