that's very odd. more likely it was a resistance problem, i.e. a little finger oil or oxidation on the battery/contacts. usually a little cleaning with alcohol/wiping on a dry paper towel or rough surface will fix that. only some of the older macs used the pram battery to fire up the power supply, on the newer ones there's a low power 5v output on the power supply that stays on. most likely the new battery just had cleaner contacts and swapping the battery cleaned off the contacts in the holder enough to work. lithium batteries don't die slowly like some batteries, they tend to stay very strong right up till the end and then the output drops off like a car driving off a cliff.
