Our B&WG3s will only work with specific RAM sticks. Maybe someone will give you the particulars but the visual difference I've noticed is the sticks that work only have chips on one side of the board. Something in the way it looks at the board only allows it to see one side; hence the 128mb on a 256mb stick. I have a stick of PC100/256mb and PC133/256mb and they are compatible. One word of caution though; make sure the stick is for the Apple. I blew my mother board by inserting the wrong stick even though it came from my Beige G3. The owner of a local Mac shop blew a second B&W mother board trying to trouble shoot the problem. I hope this helps.
