I've a beige G3 minitower that once ran OS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.1.5 with a PowerLogix G4/450 upgrade CPU installed. Attempts to upgrade to 10.2 have proven difficult to say the least. On those occasions when the installer completes, the machine fails to find the boot partition on which 10.2 is installed.
The machine has been restored to its original condition, which includes a G3/266 CPU, Rev. A ROM, a SCSI card, a personality card, and an ATA hard drive (set to master on the first ATA bus), and the original Apple CD-ROM (on the second ATA bus). No go. It has been stripped to the bare essentials (no SCSI card, personality card, or other PCI card, one stick of original RAM). No go. Every component has been replaced, one by one, except the case. (We've verified that those same components work under OS X 10.2 in another identical beige G3 minitower, too, so it doesn't appear as if it's any individual component.) No go. I've tried another identical motherboard, and no go. Yes, OS X is being installed on the first partition of the HD that is less than 8mb. Yes, we've tried the HD jumpers in the Master, Slave Cable Select and totally open positions. Right now, the SCSI bus on the motherboard is open (the cable was removed to improve air flow), but that shouldn't make any difference, should it? Yes, I have only one drive per bus. Yes, I've zapped the PRAM. Often. I'm at a loss on this machine. Does anyone have any suggestions for other things to try? Thanks! Francis Drouillard, PE OPAC Consulting Engineers, Inc.
