If the computer is only a month old tell your friend to call Apple tech 
support. It will receive free telephone troubleshooting for 3 months 
and if an extended warranty is purchased (within 3 months, I think) 
that phone tech support will continue on for up to 3 years. I would ask 
them and keep the results they reveal for discussion here.
