He may have a bad combo drive, if that's the drive in his machines. I had a Philips combo drive in my MDD 867 go bad and Apple sent me another one. One of the ways their tech diagnosed the problem over the phone was its inability to boot from a CD, in my case, the Hardware Test CD.
