Perhaps installed OS X? Sometimes installing OS X on Beige G3s makes an 
IDE bus vanish. Zapping the PRAM for ten times in a row brings back lost 
IDE busses.

Also IIRC the CD bus (ATA1) is slower than the IDE bus used for HDs. I 
believe ATA1 is ATA16.67 and the other ATA33.
