> c. Is it possible to use PC133 RAM modules (which are cheaper than > PC100 > modules, locally)? Will this create instability issues id mixed with > PC100?
> Yes, you can use PC133 RAM and it will mix fine with the current PC100 > DIMMs. I have a mix of them and they work fine. Just make sure to > get Mac-compatible RAM, or there's no guarantee that it will work... > a. How big a hard drive can I add? As big as you want. I personally have a 40 gig that I transferred over from my upgraded iMac and a 120 gig I got on sale from CompUSA. You can add as big of a hard drive you want, but you can only add 2 without a PCI card > Do I need a formatting program (i.e. FWB > Hard Disk Toolkit, Silverlining) like I would for SCSI hard drives? No. > b. Are standard CD burners usable? Is there any third party burner that > works with the apple drivers (for both MacOS 9.2.X and OS 10.2.X)?3. > Yes. Standard CD-RW drives will work. I bought a Bus-Link (Lite-On) 52x24x52. It works with the built in disc burner, iTunes, and of course the 3rd party programs. > a. I'm going to be driving a standard Mac display, or perhaps a VGA > type > display. Is this possible with the current generation Radeon cards > (7000, > 8500, 9000)? I just recently upgraded from the Apple OEM Video Card (Rage 128 Pro) to a Radeon 8500 Mac Edition. If you want to drive a VGA monitor, make sure you get the RETAIL version, in the nice looking package (thats how you know). Not the Apple OEM card in the brown cardboard. It only has DVI and ADC ports. I would recommend you upgrade your video right away, as Quartz Extreme will not run on the OEM Rage card. > b. Aside from standard speed differences, is there any reason to buy > anything more expensive than a Radeon 7000? I will be playing some 3D > games, > but not first person shooters (Quake, Doom, etc.). > Radeon 7000 for mac only comes in PCI version. The G4s all have AGP slots (except for the original PCI model based on a Yikes! motherboard. The Radeon 9000 doesn't have as many pixel rendering pipelines and some of the features will not be taken advantage of by your G4. The graphics cards I would recommend would be the Radeon 8500 Mac Edition, or the GeForce 3 Mac. > Intent is get the machine onto OS 10.2.x, running Quartz Extreme, it is > currently running 9.2.1. With the 400MHz G4, OS 10.2.4 will be very snappy. Much faster than your old 8500/120 :-) . The thing you will need to run QE (Quartz Extreme) is the better graphics card. Get one with 64 megs of VRAM. Something like the GF3 or the R8500. Have Fun With Your New Mac :-D -Jared -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
