Hi all--

I just tried to migrate to a new out of the box Sawtooth 400 MHz DVD
model from my trusty Umax C600. A couple of problems showed up
immediately. As I unboxed the machine, I opened the side door to
look inside and saw both the IDE cable and power plug disconnected
from the optical drive. Off to a great start. I noticed that the
back of the DVD is covered with a metal plate so it is difficult to
see what jumper options, etc are. That does raise a question: What
is the jumper scheme used? Cable select? Master/slave?

Secondly, since this box came with OS 9.04, I was going to put 9.1 on
via a CD I have and then add a 2nd drive and put Jaguar on, something
I have been looking lustfully for quite some time. I did plug the
cables in the DVD drive but there was absolutely no response from the
drive. Door didn't open, no mechanical sounds, period. Really not
good. So I plugged in an external Firewire CD burner and fired it up
expecting the CD to mount as it should. Nada--didn't even try to
mount. I saw FW extensions in the proper place in the System Folder
but do I need an additional driver for an external drive or a hacked
Apple driver like the old SCSI drives needed? Otherwise, I'm nervous
that the FW bus might be hosed.

Is there a good online guide for Sawtooth issues? Over on the
Supermacs list we're in the process of gathering the collective
wisdom of the list for such a guide. It does help that a former Umax
project manager has kept all the knowledge base articles he pretty
much wrote himself but if someone here has already put together a
list of Sawtooth FAQs, some dos & don'ts, etc, then point me in that
direction so I don't unnecessarily try peoples' patience. Thanks for
any answers.
