on apple's machines, they are peers. originally, it did make a difference and still does on older hardware. the spec has been changed to allow both drives to act as "master" and use the master/slave line just for a drive select. in the old days, it's my understanding that microsoft spent a whole day on the "master/slave" thing at their schools because when it matters on older machines it can be very tricky.
