I have the same exact drive in my G4/400 Sawtooth. It replaced my old DVD-ROM drive. It boots off CDs fine, burns fine, and works perfectly with OS X. I stopped using 9 as soon as a got a hold of a copy of Jaguar, so I can't help you with 9.1 compatibility.
