I'm building a G4 from loose parts that I'm collecting. From eBay I
bought a G4 Gigabit Ethernet logic board, a power supply, a graphics
card, and an 8600 case to put it in. From Other World, I bought a
Giga Designs 800 mhz upgrade processor (a really good deal if you
don't need super graphics). The rest of the pieces/parts come from
my pile of parts at home. It actually runs and boots up in both OS X
and OS 9. I love it!!!
Here's the question. An article on MacOpz:
http://www.macopz.com/buildamac/
which details how to do all this buying and connecting of spare
parts, says that there is a heat sink built onto the case behind the
logic board that makes contact with the Philips chip on the back side
of the board. Obviously, this Philips chip does some mysterious hot
things and needs to be cooled down. (Me, too, occasionally.) I've
never seen the inside of a bare G4 case and the guy at CompUSA won't
let me rip the logic board out of any of the G4's they have there.
Can anyone help with some info on this heat sink? Measurements?
Photos? Some other site that talks about it?
