But Ill bet if you frontload Netscape with a pile of memory your stability problems go away.
Didn't for me. Using it under 8.6 at work it would crash about two or three times a week, often while doing nothing in the background.
Hmmm...8.6 might be the problem here; the folks I know using NS 7 are
also running 9; however, crashing once or twice a week is not something they'd bring to my notice.
A question: Is 7.02 based on the last version of Mozilla-for-OS9, or is that last Mozilla actually newer (which might hint at one final update for Netscape-for-OS9)?
I belive it's the same; you could always try Mozilla and see if it's something they messed up with on the Netscape side.
Another question: Can unused pieces of the suite be disabled in order to allow for less RAM consumption and faster launch times? I'd love the option of disabling Mail and Composer for those users who wouldn't use it.
I don't think so; and I don't think it make's much of as difference; the program's pretty modular...if you don't use something not a lot gets loaded into memory.
I've seen them listed ion checkboxes in the custom install, but those checkboxes have always been grayed out.
This *is* the way the Mozilla project is evolving, into splitting the components into different applications: there's Firebird (Used to be called Phoenix, until the BIOS company complained) and Thunderbird, the browser-only and mail-only versions.
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/release-notes.html> and <http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/index.html>
However, I don't think an OS9 port of these is being considered.
A Q&D test on a Windows machine with Mozilla 1.3 (so YMWDV!) shows that with Quickstart alone running, it has about 18M allocated. If I fire up the Mail component alone, it jumps up to 24M. If I quit the email, and open a browser window to CNN, it uses 25M. If I open both mail and the browser window it's using 31M.
It *looks* like when you're not running a component, it's not consuming RAM.
IE 6 running the same CNN web page uses 18M of ram...however, since IE is so embedded into the OS, this certainly isn't a valid comparison, as some of it's ram usage is probably subsumed into other processes.
