When I have to, I use MS Office 2001 on this antique Kanga running 9.1 with
160 MB RAM. I'm not particularly MS-friendly, but in all fairness, Office
2001 runs fabulously on this beautiful, babied old laptop -- Word and
Entourage especially. Excel, after the start time, is almost as fast as it
is on P4s (I don't have a lot of bloat here -- except for MS Office, I
guess). And this on a November 1997 G3.

PowerPoint can be a problem child, but that's because I'm running a heck of
a lot of other apps to put a presentation together in PowerPoint. While I'm
looking for cabin in Alaska for the winter.

The Mac version of Office for me has been a model of stability and speed,
offers bend-backwards compatibility, gave me the most brain-dead of
installation work (for 9.1, anyway) with no problems like init crap, offers
more in an office suite than any other office suite out there that _I_ know
of, and buries AppleWorks with a stake in the heart, especially when it
comes to file compatibility (between 9.1, 9.2.2, and XP) and sharing of
files over Mac/PC nutworks.

I've experienced no database corruption with Mac Office since September of
2002, when I took off with a PowerBook for Alaska. I've experienced no
slowdown of my 'Book and my 8500 G3 upgrade that can't be fixed by regular
repairs of certain preferences in the Classic OS, and certain procedures
(ie., um... can you run Disk Warrior... and maybe TechTool)?

More from here from Fairbanks. You can read a newspaper at 3 a.m. outdoors.

For those of you in Redmonds, fight the good fight.
