I've doing the same thing over the last year. With OS X I use Griffin's 
iMic with Bias Sound's Peak LE software. Works great. Peak is a Mac 
only program, good tech support and help, excellent printable manual 
comes with it. It's not freeware, but the LE edition is reasonably 
priced and will do what you want very well.
