if you've created a root account, that's probably the username and password it needs. the only way to override it is by booting with the install disk. if you haven't created a root account, you'll probably have to in order to install some software. also, remember that case is important, and os x handles spaces i.e. " " oddly, if they are in the username the name will work with or without spaces, but not necessarily so on an installer. those are my best guesses.
