Asumming the Sonnet 500 has a full 1MB of L2 that will help. But although going from 300 to 500MHz is welcome any day, I don't know that it would make a huge impact. The apps you mention with the possible exception of web browsing and Pshop Elements aren't very processor intensive. For a bigger impact, what about going further to 800 or 1000MHz?
He's got enough RAM; what about a faster HD with ATA -66 or faster controller? As I recall the B&W models don't even have ATA-66 native on the motherboard.
