... I have read on my past G-List archives that there are several Promise
chips that one variety is mac only, and one is flashable to Mac or PC. (Peter H
says so?) But even so, I can't even find a reference to Macs anywhere on the
Maxtor site, or any reference at maxtor (or XLR8) that has any reference to
this flash software.

The sites don't talk about it because the firmware doesn't exist.

The PC-only Maxtor (and other) card utilizes the Promise PDC20269 chip.

The Mac-only SIIG (and other) card utilizes the Promise PDC20269M chip.

The cards themselves are otherwise identical.

PDC20269 and PDC20269M ... two distinct instances of the same "core" chip ...
the supporting EEPROM, now contained wholly within the chip, is completely
different.

Promise did this so that cards which were intended for the PC universe could
not be "diverted" to the Mac Universe. This was product protection for itself
and price protection for its licensees.

Sort of like Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs, except that there are no "region
free" players out there.
