So anyway, Maxtor includes a ATA/133 pci adapter in the box because this was the only way they could originally sell the drive to anyone. It's based on a "Promise" chip, of which I know there are several. It says that it only supports Windows. I am guessing that this was one of the original Maxtor 160s that came out over a year ago--but I'm not sure.
So I figured that if I looked real hard, I could find a mac driver for this card--partly because Staples also has another maxtor card and superdrive that does support macs. Well I looked really was unable to find any driver. I have read on my past G-List archives that there are several Promise chips that one variety is mac only, and one is flashable to Mac or PC. (Peter H says so?) But even so, I can't even find a reference to Macs anywhere on the Maxtor site, or any reference at maxtor (or XLR8) that has any reference to this flash software.
I am guessing that I am stuck selling this on eBay for $20 (going price) and either paying $69 for a Mac ATA/133 adapter or just being satisfied with (only heh, heh) a 138 meg drive.
Can anyone correct me if I am wrong about this?
(PS. I have read reviews of this adapter and it is typically rated at 1/2 a star out of five. I've never seen anything rated that low--but then I don't use Windows a lot. Maybe its good thing if I don't waste my time trying since apparently 3/4 Windows users can't get it to work either.)
