What exactly do you mean by finger guard (I don't have the mac

Yes, precisely. It is built into the case, not into the power supply.

For the G3 DT, Apple simply reused the "7500 Case" part, rather than
redesigning it.

As a consequence, no allowance was made for SDRAM in the neighborhood of that
finger guard.

Obviously, there was no RAM sticks in that area on the predecessor machines.

Bad idea ... the MT case (and its 8600/9600 predecessor) was Apple's all-time
best ever case.

You can completely remove the finger guard, or you can smash it down a little.

As it is, the finger guard is an "interference fit" fit with standard size
(height) SDRAM sticks.

If you elect to crump down the finger guard, so so a by about 1/4". That way
it will more than adequately clear the tallest SDRAM stick.

However, since the finger guard can be cleanly removed in about three minutes
using only a Zona "razor saw", perhaps its best just to completely remove it.
