The reason my clamshell iBook display was cycling on & off with the lid closed was that the keyboard was very slightly misplaced, and a key was physically being pressed. By simply replacing the keyboard in it's correct position, all was solved. I didn't discover this myself, but found it on the iBook discussion group at the Apple support website. It appears very common, and most people thought it was software related, as I did. It can kill your LCD with heat buildup when the lid is closed, so make certain your keyboard is correctly placed.
