Am about to replace the Hard Drive in my Beige G3-233 Desktop. would like to put a 7200 rpm 8 meg cache IDE drive there but I am afraid of it over-heating in the not very well ventilated G3 case. Earlier in the year, I had a 7200 rpm SCSI drive die in my PM7300 and I think that was due to over-heating. I live in the tropics and it is 30 to 32 degrees C (86 to 90 F) all the year around.

Does anybody think this fear is unfounded ? I plan to use the internal IDE controller of the G3 as I have already filled all the pci slots with nic, usb and firewire cards. perhaps will consider the all in one Sonnet card later but a G4 is more tempting :)

Will it help if I mount a fan near the hard drive to blow air across it ? can always use the extra power connectors but it will add noise :( Or perhaps I should just stick with a 5400 rpm 2 Meg cache HD.
