Thanks for the input. If you go to our web page, you can link to our G4 to either search or browse our inventory. That whole set-up is handled by Filemaker Pro 4.1 and Claris Home Page. (For one brief moment in time, Home Page and Filemaker worked together to make being your own server possible - it was years ago, buy I only realized it a year ago or so ago when I needed to find a way to be more in control of our future. I was lucky to have the programs.) And they work in O.S. 9. I don't think Home Page was ever produced in a more advanced generation. I think they were bought by Filemaker and removed from the market. Though I don't know, my theory is that Home Page was incorporated into Filemaker creating a Filemaker Server application which is a lot more expensive.
Because you can search/browse our inventory 24 hours a day (theoretically) the G4 is always operating in O.S. 9 - I just assume that since Filemaker and Home Page require O.S. 9 - it has to be open. I don't see how I can use O.S. 10 on it without disabling the G4 as our server. And two other Macs (Gs & iMac) are networked with it. I know that no one is making me move. But support of 9 will diminish. We have a PC6100, a Performa 5200 and until a few months ago when the HD seemed to die a llcx. All work independently and just fine in earlier O.Ss. You've got me wondering if the Performa would do better in 7.5 rather than 8, which is what it's running on now. I would like to get into 10 because I do think it's the future and I want to be familiar with it. My fear had only to do with not wanting to do anything to wreck how the server is working now. For the used book business, this is a critical time. Sites that use to rent space (alibris, abe and so on) are getting more costly to run on. It used to be a flat fee for so much space esentially. Now it's a percentage of the sale, too and we're in the 20% zone. It can be higher because if you're on Amazon Marketplace or B&N, you do it thought alibris or abe and now 2 parties want a cut. And how much can you raise the price of a book before the buyer says no? So a lot of dealers are now trying to create their own site where (at least in our case) the prices are 20% cheaper. And there is the rise of froogle, which can perhaps give you a chance to have your inventory be searched just like amazon. Well, maybe they can buy better placement, but at least a rare title will come up by a title / author search which is not the case now on say google. Anyway, I am simply afraid to try O.S. 10 and then discover trouble getting back to 9 - as emails on this list seem to suggest that messing around can cause a problem. > >This I can understand, thing is, no one is making you move, and those >things never cost any less.
