this sounds suspiciously like the pdf problems I encounter frequently on *nix
systems. For pdf files printed with acrobat reader I've about a 50-50 chance
of actually getting anything on the printer. Sometimes it just wont print.

What occasionally (but not always) helps to process the pdf in ghostscript
(I think there is a MAC version too) and rerun the ps again with pswrite as
output device, setting explicitly page size. If that doesn't help and I
*really* need the printout I run them through ghostscript with a picture
format as output (png, gif,...) and print *these*. 

I personally blame acrobat for pdf/postscript problems due to
imcompatibilities and plain garbage in the created ps files. This is valid
for any version or *nix-acroread. I couldn't see any improvement with the
versions. Printing in Windows acroread to a *non ps printer* seems to work
mostly as this is converting to graphics in the first place.
