G3 Beige Boot Problem - Unknown Word

I've been playing with a G3 DT -bigger hard drives, loaded OS X, an 
upgrade zif.  Minor problems but it all ran - for a while.  Now on 
boot, I get a gray screen with the words: 'unknown word'.
Any suggestions?
