This may be slightly OT question, but involves the G3 processor and an upgrade of a 604e PPC.
I regularly use a Beige G3 DT, 300mhz with 512 MB RAM. I have a PPC 9600 / 200 and a PPC 8600 / 200 and have recently purchased an XLR8 ZIF Carrier and an XLR8 G3 / 400 ZIF with 1 MB/ L2 cache, which I had planned on installing in the 9600 to make a G3 out of it. In reading the XLR8 installation material it indicates that it is best that the previous L2 cache chips should be removed ( when possible ) but that in those computers with the L2 cache soldered to the mother board ( such as the 9600 ), the cache can be "turned of" with the XLR8 MACh software. Since I also have a PPC 8600 with the removeable L2 Cache chip, would it be better to upgrade it rather than the 9600. The major difference in the computers would be the increased expandability of the 9600 with 6 vs 3 PCI slots. ( Actually only two different since the 9600 requires one be used for a video card, already present in the 8600.) Any suggestions or experiences appreciated.
