Rich,

I agree that the USB options are crappy. I also agree with you now about the FireWire options. They are fast, and capable. They are just kinda expensive, to me at least. Well, some of them, anyway. Regardless, this seems to be the way I need to go... any suggestions on the best one for the least money? I know about the Canopus device, but it is almost $300 for one. Is there any others for Mac that is cheaper, but still can do around DVD size captures, as well as smaller sizes (352x240, 480x480, 720x???)?

As far as the machine... would a B&W G3, at say 350, 400, or 450 MHz be adequate? Or is a G4 upgrade needed? If so, what would be the minimum speed needed? G4/500?

Yeah, I'm aware that VHS source isn't a great source. Especially at EP speed, which is what most of my source tapes are. But, I do eventually want to do other sources when I'm done with the current project. Perhaps copying saved video from a DVR/PVR to tape, then capturing to disc? DVD backups? Oh, I know some DVR's can transfer to a computer over FireWire, but I don't know if the one I am going to get has this ability. My cable company just a week or so ago announced digital cable boxes w/ DVR built in. Cable companies are notorious for skimping on features like this, or disabling the ports via software. I can't wait to get one of these, though! I have to wait, unfortunately... my local company won't release the boxes that can capture HDTV until December at the earliest, and I'd rather do that. Especially for the same price...

Anyway... I digress.

Any ideas on the above systems?

M.
