The thing that I'm pretty sure I'm missing is the sync-on-green, but I'm
unsure if the NeXT d isplay does this or not. However, with a Liberty
Enhance adapter, I was under the impression I could set that information
inside the adapter, and that it would take care of the correct output? I
don't really know how those work, having been unable to find instructions.

Also, not all workstation monitors required that. I'm able to connect my
Sparcs to a regular SVGA monitor (albeit at one fixed resolution and scan
rate), through a simple adapter.

Its not that the NeXT unit requires the soundbox, either. It does if you
want to use the whole NeXT, because the output from the slab goes to the
soundbox, then splits: part goes to form the ADB, part goes to form the
sound itself, and the rest carries on to do the monitor. This is why you
couldn't just put an SVGA monitor onto a NeXT.

It seems like it should be feasable, considering a NeXT was very similar
to a fancy Mac. If the units you see are cheap enough, you almost owe it
to yourself to buy one and then you can try out the original Mac OS X:
NeXTSTeP. Hell, my love of my old NeXT was the reason I bought a Mac to
try it out.
