David,
If you need an "audio" card for improved audio experiences for domestic/home
theatre situations (ala "Soundblaster" types for a PC), take a look at the
MAudio "Revolution 7.1",
[sold here, for ex. (NOTE to all: this is not an endorsement)]:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/revolution.html
Here's the product's actual web page:
http://www.m-audio.net/products/consumer/revolution_page1.php
OS X compatible, not a bad price (at ramelectronics), as list is $120. Since
this is listed as "consumer" audio, I'm sure you can successfully shop for a
competitive price. Looks like a good card - down side, digital out is co-ax
only (not fibre-optical)

USB interface is another option - however, if digital I/O is a concern,
you'll get more reliable connection via PCI. Her, look at MAudio's "Sonica
Theater" or Griffin's "PowerWave"

If your needs are actually more of a commercial/professional-standard I/O
interface, then there are actually many more options for the Mac - go
figure!

Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Dana
