David, If you need an "audio" card for improved audio experiences for domestic/home theatre situations (ala "Soundblaster" types for a PC), take a look at the MAudio "Revolution 7.1", [sold here, for ex. (NOTE to all: this is not an endorsement)]: http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/revolution.html Here's the product's actual web page: http://www.m-audio.net/products/consumer/revolution_page1.php OS X compatible, not a bad price (at ramelectronics), as list is $120. Since this is listed as "consumer" audio, I'm sure you can successfully shop for a competitive price. Looks like a good card - down side, digital out is co-ax only (not fibre-optical)
USB interface is another option - however, if digital I/O is a concern, you'll get more reliable connection via PCI. Her, look at MAudio's "Sonica Theater" or Griffin's "PowerWave" If your needs are actually more of a commercial/professional-standard I/O interface, then there are actually many more options for the Mac - go figure!
