I would bet money your CD-ROM drive is bad... Or it does not like the brand of CD-R's your using.
Difference between CD types;
CD - Brand Name CD or Audio CD == Very high refection, Very Easy To Read by LAZER
CD-R - Home Brew == Good Refection, Not Supported by some 1x 2x or 4x readers
CD-RW - Home Brew == Poor Refection, Not Support by most 1x 2x 4x or 8x readers
It is probably a sign that your CD Reader is starting to go. In my experience 4 to 5 years out of a CD-R is the best your going to get. If you burn a CD-R at 2x or 4x and your reader can not read it but a second reader can... It is most likely a hardware problem.
I have never tried a CD-R cleaning CD, You may want to try that. CD-R's are CHEAP, CD-RW are also cheap. Go Splurge You deserve it!
