This is correct. All ATA cards trick the MacOS into believing that: 1) they are SCSI cards (this is the only way the card will be recognized at power-on time as a card which supports media), and 2) that the attached ATA drives are SCSI drives (this is the only way the attached drives will be recognized by a) Drive Setup, for initialization, b) the finder, after initialization, and c) the restart code, as a candidate for booting). It's a work-around that has been successful from MacOS 7 to MacOS 9.
