glen, what can i say?!

thank you so much for sending such a detailed email - it's apparent that it
can be done but not as simple as reformatting the drive!!

the ipod i have is an older 1st generation 5gig machine. the one i have is
actually a replacement, the original battery died after 5 months! apple to
their credit got dhl to pick it up, it was away for two weeks and then they
sent me a new one!.

i'll plum for the 1.2.6 updater as i'm not using aac files as yet (only by
accident as that's the default option in itunes 4... took me 3 cd's to
figure that one out!).

apatec cards being ordered up but i'm gonna test it with the pc here at work
first (has a card in it already).

i'll let you know how i get on.

again, thanks for your help - owe you a beer!

cheers,

jake

Jake,

I have intimate knowledge of this procedure. Recently I headed a team
that specialized in the support of Apple's Windows products. The info
I'm providing depends somewhat on which iPod you have. The newest iPods
are supplied with both the PC and Mac versions of MP3 players (iTunes
and MusicMatch). The older versions of the iPod where formatted for
specific platforms and only had the type of software that the iPod was
formatted to work on. First, some precautions.

If your iPod is serialized for Mac (older model formated HFS+) you will
have trouble getting support if you call Apple with an iPod that has
been converted from Mac to PC. Apple can see that your iPod started out
life as a Mac iPod. In theory, converting a Mac iPod for use with
Windows is not supported. Having said that, follow these steps:

1) You will need MP3 software. The only version that is supported is
MusicMatch. There are others such as F-pod and X Play, but I have had
many phone calls where 3rd party applications have fried an iPod's
firmware chip. Once that happens you will have voided your warranty and
you will have to pay to get your iPod fixed. Download MusicMatch 7.5
free here:

http://www.musicmatch.com/download/free/index.cgi?OEM=APPLE

MusicMatch 8.0 is out there, but it may not work correctly with your
iPod. 7.5 is the only officially supported version at this time.

2) Next you will need the windows iPod Updater. It's available free
from Apple's download page. If you have an older (fatter) iPod (either
5 or 10 GB models) you will need iPod Updater 1.2.6. Only problem with
1.2.6 is that it doesn't work with AAC files, if that's important to
you. If you have a newer iPod (thinner) model (10, 15, or 30 GB) you
will need iPod Updater 1.3. Trust me on this: DO NOT run the 1.3
updater on an older iPod model. You will KILL it for good and have to
send it in for repairs. ONLY run the 1.3 Updater on new model iPods!
And DO NOT run the 1.2.6 updater on a newer iPod!

iPod Updater 1.2.6 (for older iPods):

iPod Updater 1.3 (for newer iPods):

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120236

3) Finally, you will need a FireWire card. Don't waste your time with
anything other than Adaptec brand. Be sure not to get the Rev A of the
card (which are old news and hard to find), but all other Revs work
great in all the OSes that iPod is supported in (ME, 2K, and XP). There
are many other makers of the cards, but Adaptec is essentially
bulletproof.

4) The newer iPods support USB 2.0 on PCs. You need a special cable
from the Apple store to use it.

5) If you ever need to send in your iPod for repair you can set it up
through this website:

https://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/index.html

Officially, iPods are mail in repair only. You can usually take it to
an Apple store where they can do some cursory tests on it, but they
will eventually have to send it in if it needs repair.

This is all the info you need to be iPoding on your PC in no time!
