Upgraded my G3 DT 233 Rev A with a G4/466 OWC Zif, 576 RAM. Had my 60 GB HD
partitioned into 9.1 and 8.1volumes, no problems. Repartitioned into 3 volumes
(2 HFS+, one standard) and installed 9.2.2 on first 2, and 8.0 on last , they
worked fine. Then put OSX on the first volume, 7.8 GB. After a false start it
installed fine. I ran it for a couple of hours, made some downloads and read
mail on internet, looked at different apps, no problems. Set Startup disk in
system preferences to the 9.2 volume (the other 2 volumes also had that
selected). Restarted.

Could not access any drives. Got a sequence of happy mac followed by question
mark on folder, 3 times, I suppose indicating it tried to read all three
volumes and couldn't find a system folder. Tried to start up from 9.2 CD, it
seemed to freeze after the desktop started to load. Was able to start up from
8.0 disk, but system 8 can't access the HFS+ volumes. Tried the 9.2 disk again
and it said "cannot read this drive". Was able to start up from Tech Tool Pro
2, it found some bad blocks, but when I tested with Intech HD Disk Tools, it
reported no problems. Couldn't get the HD to boot in any manner, extensions
off, or option key down, or x key down, etc.

Finally did low level format of the drive with Intech tools and reinstalled 9.2
and 8. they worked fine, could reboot no problem. Installed 10.2 on first
partition, this time without putting 9.2.2 on first. Again, it installed and
ran fine. Again, when I selected the 9.2.2 volume as start-up disk I could not
reboot, same question mark. It turned out that booting from the 9.2 disk didn't
freeze, but slowed down so it took 1-4 minutes for any action, e.g. moving a
folder to the desktop. After a few attempts to look at some folders, it gave a
message "cannot read this drive" again. I tried to initialize with drive
set-up, and got message that it couldn't because the drive was damaged.

I finally erased the drive with Intech's tools (on a floppy), repartitioned
with Drive Setup from 9.2 disk and installed 9.2.2 and 8.0 again on the second
2 partitions and they both run fine without OS X being installed on the first
partition.

Any suggestions why I can't restart after I install 10.2?

Michael
