Something similar happened to me, OS 9.2 was on a drive used through a PCI
SCSI card I didn't know I needed to update the drivers for the card same thing
you said happened everytime I'd choose to start on 9.2 (on the separate
drive). I had to unplug the OSX drive to go on to 9.2 in several ocasions. Updated
the drivers now everything is working smoothly.

If its Apple branded you need to get to:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Engli
sh-North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_X/MacOS_X_SCSICard_Updater.smi.bin

If its Adaptec you need to go to their website and get one of these (not sure
if it will work for you thou):

http://download.adaptec.com/mac/scsi/PowerDomain_2940UW.bin
http://download.adaptec.com/mac/scsi/PowerDomain_Control_v611.hqx

Oh btw SCSI probe will give you more details about the card's manufacturer:

http://download.adaptec.com/mac/scsi/SCSIProbe_v52.hqx

Good luck!
