No way. There is NO way a functional OS X install should run classic more slowly than VPC. It should run as fast as any other program.

I wasn't really talking about speed, but preferences and settings for example. At least Netscape 7.02 didn't work with my old settings (the info is in OS9drive/documents/mozilla/users [something like that]) ok this might be Netscape's fault since they used to be in the preferences folder in older versions, then they changes (why would they do that? is it an OSX thing?).

Well it's sort of an OSX thing.

Your e-mail and user prefs are stored in your home directory in OS X, and Netscape 7.02 is an app that runs in either OS X or OS 9. What you would do is import your settings from your old user folder on the OS 9 disk

Your fundamental problem here is that OSX is not merely an upgrade to OS 9, it is a complete replacement, and unlike previous OS upgrades, it does not automatically find and use your old prefs files.

Also OSX is inherently a multi-user system, where the user is presumed not to have full access to System folder, whereas OS 9 was definitely a single user system where anyone who could turn on the computer could do anything they wanted with it.

There are pluses and minuses to this structure, but on the whole, the Mac OS is moving in the right direction. It's just a shock getting used to all the new stuff.

That and it's a *lot* more complicated in the OS X system folder than it was in OS 9...in geberal you don't *want* to be messing about in it, which is why all your own prefs and such are stored in your user directory.

Ok is my fault I should download and install the OSX Netscape, how do I tranfer my settings? Will it do that automatically?

Netscape 7.02 *should* run natively under OS X anmd 9 in the same package. (I think) But the 7.1 version is definitely and upgrade worth getting.

You can import mail, address books and settings by going to Tools > Import in the mail client.

In the Main browser select Manage Bookmarks from the bookmarks menu and in Tools > Import menu there you can import your old bookmarks.

You may also want to investigate Apple's own mail program. I really like it, and only use Mozilla here at work because they make me use a PC...the Junk Mail filter is a great feature that actually works quite well.

The biggest problem you've got is that you're running OSX on *way* too
small a disk.

I didn't install much the base stuff them some applications, there is still 500MB free on that disk.

That's tight, nonetheless. If you continue using OSX you'll want to get a larger drive; apps eat up that space pretty quickly and your home directory is on that drive as well.

You've not mentioned how much memory you've got, either.

256MB physical, no virtual mem

Virtual memory is *always* on in OS X, but it's run differently, so it's not the system messup that it was under OS 9, but it does mean oyou're eating a variable amount of that remaining disk space for VM. (and no, you can't turn it off, moreover, due to the way Unix works, you really don't want to)

Again, if you continue to use OS X, you'll probably want to invest in more memory.

I have a Beige G3 with a G4/466 upgrade, 768 mb of ram and a 30 Gb drive...and OSX runs quite happily on that setup. The drive only cost me $45, iirc, after a rebate.
