--- You wrote: Do I buy a IDE or a ATA drive and how do I format it? Also what would be a good model to get as I intend to do some video editing with iMovie. In addition which Radeon card will work in my G3 and give me use of a 2nd monitor and do I leave in the video card that's already installed (ATI mach64_3DU)? I'll be doing the CPU upgrade next month
Thanks in advance, S. Lee --- end of quote --- Any 7200 rpm ATA drive will work fine for video, even on the native ata bus, in my experience. Bigger is better for video, since gigs disappear rapidly. Watch for deals at Staples and other chain stores. Be sure you have a rev B or C rom if you plan to use the native bus. Not an issue if you buy an ATA card which will handle 4 drives. (I actually am running 4 right now. Not easy to find a place for them in an MT.) The big advantage of the card is for moving those huge video files around, not so much for digitizing or rendering or saving. The Radeon 7000 Mac version will support two monitors but costs twice as much as the pc version. The pc model needs to be flashed to work with Mac (someone on the list can tell you how) and will not work with two monitors. On the other hand, you can use the card for your primary monitor and the native video bus for a second monitor. This works very well, actually. (With the Mac Radeon, therefore, you could use three monitors. I've been tempted to do so with all the windows in Final Cut.) If you don't use the mother board video, just ignore it. There's no performance penalty. When you upgrade your processor, go for G4. It doesn't cost much more than G3 but many of the video applications can make use of Altivec (only on G4) for a big performance boost in some functions. So I'm told, anyway. I have a 466mhz G4 from OWC and it cost under $200. Good luck. Rich -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
