I have a network of a couple of Beige G3s running 9.2 tied together with ethernet, however each person has an old workhorse LocalTalk laser printer (Laserwriter Select 360, LW IIg, LaserJet 5MP) hooked to their computer.
I have installed LocalTalk Bridge 2.1 on all systems. The annoyance is that the first time each day that we print to a printer, we almost always get the error message that the printer could not be found. If we click the Try Again button, it finds the printer and prints just fine. I don't have to go to any setup or control panels to get them to print, just hit the try again button. I've tried trashing prefs etc with no help.
This is not life shaking, just a minor annoyance and it is tarnishishing my reputation in the company as being able to fix anything technology related. Any thoughts?
I suspect it may be related to LTB, 'cause I ran into a similar problem trying to use it on a PB running 9, iirc.
I couldn't get it to go away. In my case I solved it by permanently switching the user's Mac to the printer port for Appletalk, since he accesses our servers via entering the IP address in chooser, anyway, as our servers aren't on his subnet.
Not optimal in your case, I know. Tell 'em they're using antique technology, and sometimes you "..jest gotta kick ol' bessie in the pants to wake 'er up!"
You also might be having Appletalk Seed router problems. Take the whole network down, and bring up one computer first, then the others. then don't turn off that one computer. (This is a good job for anold SE 30 oor soemthing...you can even turn it into a file server and such, let it run off in the corner, all by itself, and don't turn it off.)
Then one appletalk route map (if I understand the whole Seed router thing properly) is created, and you don't go through the whole 're-learning' process every day.
Back in the days when we passed Appletalk over our main campus routers this was an unending problem; every time the router was shut down for maintenance, we had to run through the building and shut down every Appletalk device, otherwise it would try to become the seed router.
