$10 for Office X? Here's the deal...
Several schools have special arrangements w/ Microsoft to share their
software with their particular academic community. In 1997-98, Indiana
University became the first school to be able to license OS and software,
such as WIN 95, 98 (at that time), Office, FrontPage, Publisher, Visual
Basic, etc. etc.
to be shared FOR FREE to any faculty, staff, student while they retained an
academic relationship w/ the university (hence, once you graduate or
terminate employment, you're supposed to discontinue use of the product).
I.U. paid $6 million for this blanket license (which covered both PC and
Mac), MS gave them the software images, and Computing Services inherited the
task of burning all those CDs. The $10 mentioned (it was $5 at I.U.) most
likely is just to cover the cost of producing the "purchased" CD. You get
whatever software you want, and you can install it already authorized to
run. Yes, for $5 apiece, I've gotten WIN 95, WIN 98se, WIN 2k, Office 2000
"Gold", Office 98 for Mac, and.. Office X for Mac. My time is almost up on
the last, and mostly I use WIN 98 just to test the veracity of a PC I'm
fixing for someone, whom I inform that they legally need to have their own
copy of the OS (etc, etc.)
Appropriately, it's considered a breach of contract for the school to sell
these specific copies to non-students/employees, nor is it appropriate to
ask a current student to get one for you (actually putting your friend in a
sticky situation), NOR is it proper (or legal) to have rightfully acquired
them then try to resell them to others. One of our swap members
inadvertantly got a bunch of these in a swap and advertised them as special
"I.U. brand" copies of MS --- . I had to give them a heads-up of what they
had, having visions of the disks being unwittingly sold to a (future) MS
employee, and our colleague suddenly inheriting all sorts of legal heat.
So, buyer beware. I'm sure there are now more schools than I.U. that have
this arrangement with MS. In fact I know it, as my daughter's small private
college (Gordon in MA) was selling such copies last semester.

All this being said, $150 for 3 *legal* and supported stations is still a
nice deal for educators.
Best regards,
Dana
