I vote for OS 10.2.x. OS 9 is much better than 8, but it has all same old annoying problems like: a really crappy ver of IE, extensions conflicts, etc. X leaves all that behind (IE is slow, but at least it works "better" than the ver in 9).

There are so many doors that open with OS X that it's worth it! Like iPhoto, iTunes 4 (the only ver that can be used to access the music store), and the iLife suite, which I believe at least one of the apps is OS X only (at least that ver of it, you can do all of them in 9, but why, oh why, would you want to?).

Jam as much RAM as you can into the iMac. I took my wife's apart, and put a 64 MB DIMM in the bottom slot (shipped with 32MB) and put a 256 in the top slot for 320 (which is more than the "official" 256 MB that the specs dbase states). I even put a 30 GB HD in it. Remember the 8 GB partition issue. I had a 40 GB drive in it, but it didn't seem to like that. After backing to a 30 GB issues stopped.

Hi-

I just picked up a 233 imac with System 8.5. It's totally stock, but I will prob throw some more RAM in. What is the best OS for this machine? 8.5-6 or 9? I'm more concerned with speed. Is there any noticeable difference between these two OS's couched in that criteria?
