Did you install Norton Utils? The older versions had a program called 
"Disk Light" that looks very much like what you're describing. It was 
designed to show you graphically when the HD is being accessed. It took 
the place of the "missing' green light blinky thing on the outside of 
the case that most Macs don't have.
