Here is what I want to do. I am videotaping the girls soccer
game. I cannot afford the time or expense to distribute tapes or
DVDs. However, I can do quicktime videos on CDs for the girls with
computers.

So I cannot figure out how to address the optimization of the
output that I take from iMovie and compress with Sorenson3. Most of
the stuff I read is talking about DVDs and internet. I want: best
output on a 4 year-old machine from a CD. Any idea where this
question would be addressed?

You might want to consider SVCD. It's MPEG 2 and near DVD quality. There are free players out there such as VLC for Jaguar and others for windows boxes. But the best part is that it can be burned to a CD and, not all but most, VCD players will play it. Even my el cheapo APEX player, which claims to not support the format, does a fine job.

I don't have Sorenson3, so I don't know if it will export as SVCD. However, if you're running OS X, ffmpegx will and it's free. It's a pita to set up, but the documentation is good and once it's up and running it works great.

I do most of my work on a Beige G3 running at 458MHz, with a Radeon 7000 video card, so the requirements to do this are pretty minimal.

The Quicktime Talk list at Apple is an excellent source of information on such topics.
