I've had that happen too. Run Disk Utility. If memory serves, it's a 
volume header issue. Boot to the OS X CD (Disk 1). Got to the Installer 
menu and choose Open Disk Utility. Click on the HD icon on the left and 
the First Aid tab. Then click "Repair Disk." If it finds anything in 
red, run the repair again. Keep running the repair until it find 
nothing in red.

disappeared, and the spinning circle of notches showed up as usual,
