I've had that happen too. Run Disk Utility. If memory serves, it's a volume header issue. Boot to the OS X CD (Disk 1). Got to the Installer menu and choose Open Disk Utility. Click on the HD icon on the left and the First Aid tab. Then click "Repair Disk." If it finds anything in red, run the repair again. Keep running the repair until it find nothing in red.

My B&W (450MHz G3) suddenly refused to shut down yesterday (when running Jaguar). When I tried to do so, the dock and icons disappeared, and the spinning circle of notches showed up as usual, but it stayed that way for more than half an hour instead of powering off as usual.
