Long answer: If ASP does not see the drive as the correct model (or more likely, it will have the correct drive nomenclature, but will say that disc burning is not supported) you may need to do an archive and install of OS X.
I bought a Samsung Combo drive to replace my DVD-RAM drive in my B/W 450. I installed it. OS X recognized the drive and I could play DVDs and read CDs in it, but ASP said disc burning was not supported. Then I found the page below, which is an awesome resource. Some folks get their 3rd party drives to work by hacking the OS X installed driver files. I tried that with the Samsung and it didn't work. According to the page below, the Toshiba SD-R1312 (I've read that the Pioneer drive makes B&Ws crash a lot, and I don't need to burn DVDs yet, so I opted for a Combo drive) would work just fine with no hacks. I bought the Toshiba and installed it. ASP still says disc burning not supported. Now, there's one caveat. Before I got the drive, I was having mild OS issues: generic icons, file associations all screwed up, etc. This happened because I got a PCI ATA controller and was backing up my original drive to my new drive and back again. I believe I had OS corruption before I got the new HD, and copying the corrupt data back and forth further corrupted the data. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say. So this may have contributed to fact that ASP said disc burning was not supported when I first installed the combo drive. If my OS was not corrupt when I installed the combo drive in the first place it may have said disc burning was supported for the Toshiba with no further work needed. So this is why I say: TEST THE DRIVE BY CHECKING ASP AND LOOKING TO SEE IF DISC BURNING IS SUPPORTED, AND ATTEMPTING TO BURN BEFORE DOING AN ARCHIVE AND INSTALL! Sorry for the caps. I'm not yelling per se, it's more that I want to make sure I get the point across.
After I did an archive and install for my particular drive it works fine now. It's 32x speed is sure a nice step up from my old USB 4x burner.
I found this page indispensable for help:

I am going to be swapping my built-in CDRW drive with a Pioneer DVR-105 drive on my PowerMac G4 466 which is running OS 10.2.6. Other than the actual physical installation, are there any other things I need to do to make this drive work?
