This is interesting... is it documented somewhere?
I don't know. I have it on a piece of paper that I keep in my DiskWarrior CD case :-) It is from a post to the SuperMac list, dated January 17, 2002, from a guy named Allen who was nice enough to share the info. The info is from a guy named Mike Rogers in the Alsoft Tech Support Department.
Can I pick the startup folder on any CD with more than one system by holding a number key?
I have no idea if this works on other CDs. You might have to play around with that sometime.
How do I know which number corresponds to what system folder?
At the bottom of this post, is Mike Rogers information in its entirety.
I have the DW 2.1.1 and 3 CDs, neither of which will work to boot my G3-upgraded 8500. It tries to start 9.2.2 or OS X and fails.
Not knowing what you have on your G3 upgraded 8500...I assume you have at least one System Folder that is native to the original setup. And, that you are using something like XPostFacto to get into OS X.
You might play around with Mike Rogers info below. Or, try posting a question to the Unsupported OSX List on LEM. I don't think you can get an unsupported system to boot into OS 9.2 or any flavor of 10 from a CD, without assistance from something like XPostFacto.

Here are Mike's comments:
The DiskWarrior CD contains 4 system folders. Your machine may not support booting from the Mac OS 9.2.1 System folder. To choose a specific System Folder for booting you will need to select the DiskWarrior CD as the startup disk in the Startup Disk Control Panel and hold down the number for that System Folder.
1 - 7.6.1
2 - 8.1
3 - 9.1
4 - 9.2.1 (default)
To start from the 9.1 System folder select the DiskWarrior CD as the startup disk in the Startup Disk Control Panel and restart the computer while holding down the 3 key.
If you are unable to start your machine from the hard disk you will need to specify the system folder during the startup process. Put the DiskWarrior CD in the machine and restart holding the "C" key down. Hold the "C" key down until you see the happy Mac icon and then release the "C" and hold down the number key associated with the System Folder you wish to boot from.

The info above is 1 1/2 years old, so he is talking about version 2 of DiskWarrior.
I recently ordered the DiskWarrior 3 upgrade CD. It arrived a few days ago. I have not even had a chance to try it yet. I just pup it in my machine for a look see. It does not contain System Folders for anything prior to OS 9.1. So, Mike's directions will not work on DiskWarrior v3.
