Don't trust reviews and opinions on monitors. Your subjective evaluation is the only thing that really matters. Regardless of whether you buy online or in a store, go out to a couple of stores with a variety of models on display and spend so time assessing how they look to you. Then buy the best price/quality mix you can afford. You should also consider 18-inch models. If you shop around, they're not much more than 17-inch, now and the increase in screen area is surprisingly substantial.
No matter what you've seen about problems with LCD displays, know that the reduction in eye strain and improvements in readability is enormous. It's a wonder any of us can still see after staring at flickering CRTs all our lives...
Do a little research online about product reliability before buying and in addition to length of warranty, find the manufacturer's required dead pixel count before replacement. This can vary widely.

1.) Are most LCD's compatible with the B&W and do I need to have any special software or hardware to use LCD's with this machine?
2.) Can anyone suggest an excellent & reliable LCD manufacturer & model that has sharp contrast and good colour? I've heard some horror stories about LCD screens that have poor backlights or sections on the screen where the colours aren't working properly. I've also read in numerous magazines that many monitors don't live up to their high contrast/resolution ratios (e.g., 400:1 or 450:1) -- how can I make sure i'm getting what they indicate on the specs?
3.) Would a 3 yr warranty be the minimum to look for? I realize i'll likely have to look at a number of them before I find the one that best suits my needs.
