Seems to be a feud going on between MacGimp and OpenOSX.
<http://openosx.com/gimp/>. Anyway their version is on CD for $30, less $5
for students.
(They also have an "Office" suite, but it's not Open [Star] Office.)
Then on Versiontracker
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/9866> another bunch of
flames against OpenOSX. A very bitchy "community".

The complaints are mostly to the effect that OpenOSX have done little more than provide a GUI installer for Gimp. They download the software from sourceforge, and the Gimp coders get none of the cash that OpenOSX collects. I'd be more inclined to pay for the MacGimp CD (to donate to the cause) or to the Gimp coders themselves, since they are the ones who really work on this (yet demand nothing in return other than community and recognition).

OpenOSX is essentially exploiting the licensing terms to make a quick buck off the Mac community, knowing that many of us will not know or understand (or even care about) the underlying issues. The same can be said for Luxuriousity.

If you're willing to buy it, go to the source and help fund the efforts. If $40 is too much, learn how to download and install it yourself.

As for their office component, AbiWord is okay, but isn't near as finished and compatible as OpenOffice.org (OOO 1.0.3 will open 95% or more of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents). If you can't download the app (178MB, it'll take a while on a 56k modem), I'll gladly burn you a disk and mail it to you for a few bucks (cost + shipping +time). I'm sure you could also find a local friend or group to do the same (check the local Linux/Unix user group, they are always very friendly and willing to help "newbies").
