There is possibly some directory or file corruption involved here. Diskwarrior, Norton Disk Doctor, or TechTool are the 3 major utilities for checking/repairing directory and file corruption. You can try Apple Disk Utility, but it is not always able to take care of problems.

It's also possible you have an extension conflict (or a corrupted Apple extension).

If you've installed Memory recently, there could be errors in the chips or the DIMMs might not be seated properly.

If you're running 8.6, make sure you have the Font update installed. 8.6 can cause corruption in font files which will cause much strange behavior in applications.
