Depends on how it's erased. OS X Disk Utility had two erase options. One is "Quick" and the other is "Complete." I imagine that the Quick version is like doing a quick format on a HD where it only erases the drive's directory. In this case, data could be recovered (in theory), but probably only by a place like Drive Savers.
