Hi!

I'm not sure how much I trust Toast's verification process. I've burned about one hundred VCDs/SVCDs with Toast and gotten a failed verification on about half of them ... but they play flawlessly on the DVD players (well, SVCD is not supported on all the DVD players ... but that is another issue). Data CDs and music CDs sometimes also fail verification, but I've never had a problem reading or playing the CDs.

So, I am not sure what the verification process does, but I've never had a disc fail verification that posed a further problem in terms of useability.

Anyone knows what verification does, from a technical perspective?

It either reads the data off the disk and compares it to the original or it reads the data and looks for any CRC errors. I'm pretty sure toast does compare the data. There are a few reasons the verification may fail and the disk is still useable.

One the drive read electronics bay be a bit on the edge.

Two, Toast may be doing a more stringent read of the disk. That is it may fail on verification if the data can't be read correctly the first time. Disk drives of all types will re-read the data if the first try fails. They will in fact attempt a read a number of times. Your other drives may be have to retry occasionally. A few times won't impact reading speed.

Three, well there was a three when I started writing this. That's what I get for trying to write while watching soccer practice.
